Applemen Parents:
We would like to welcome you to the Musselman High School Website! We hope you will find it an informative resource for you and your child, as well as a good way to keep in touch with us. Visiting this site is another way in which you can become involved in your child's education and help them to excel in their academics. We hope to expand this site and its services in the coming years.
We have several programs we have launched at Musselman High School: Sustained Silent Reading, Appleseeds Program, Student Planners, Homework Website, Character Education Initiative and the Big Apple Café. Links to descriptions of these programs are listed below. We have also listed some of the other special programs that we have established at Musselman High School over the past few years. We feel these programs will help our students to improve in the areas that standardized testing has revealed as weaknesses as well as to improve their general academic and organizational skills. Some of the programs listed below are mandatory for all students, while others are voluntary. We would encourage you to read about these programs, get your child involved, and check in on their progress on a regular basis.
Parents often ask our teachers, counselors, and administrators for simple strategies to improve their child's academics. There are probably hundreds we could list, but here are six that we feel are crucial:
-
Make sure your child misses little or no school. A study of the Minneapolis Public Schools revealed that there is a direct link between what students learn and the amount of time they spend in school.
- Limit or eliminate television and video games on school nights. The fewer the distractions, the more work children get done and the better the quality is.
- Establish the expectation that there will be "homework time" at your house each night. Students need the consistent expectation that homework is a nightly activity.
- Talk to your child each night about their classes. Asking questions and listening shows them that academics are important to you. It also helps to keep you informed.
- Be sure your child gets plenty of sleep. The benefits of well-rested students are numerous and well documented.
- If you need ways to help your child in specific subjects, contact your child's teacher as soon as possible. Feel free to leave a phone message at the central office of the school (229-1950) or email them from the faculty page of this site.
Musselman High School has made great strides over the past few years in the quality of our programs, facilities, and performance of our students. We feel that this success is due, in great part, to parents and a community that are highly involved with the school. Please feel free to contact us if you have questions or we can be of assistance.
